Ireland will ask for more information about the European Union's proposal to bring Canada in as its first associate member and about a defence plan described as flanking Nato, The Irish Times reports.
The request follows reporting that the EU is courting Canada and that the defence plan has drawn attention. According to The Irish Times, Dublin wants further detail on both matters before taking a position.
The associate membership idea has already prompted a sharp response from the United States. RTE.ie reports that President Donald Trump threatened the EU over what he called a "hostile" Canada association plan. The Guardian reports that Trump warned of "serious tariffs" after the proposal to make Canada the EU's first associate member.
